Wayfare Tavern
With much fanfare, celebrity chef Tyler Florence recently opened Wayfare Tavern in the heart of the Financial District. The new restaurant has the same old-time feel as other new restaurants and bars in the local scene, such as Rickhouse, with bartenders in suspenders serving classic cocktails, and Comstock Saloon, which evokes a Gold Rush-era saloon.
Wayfare manages to be elegant and rustic at the same time, with a dimly lit ambience and rustic oak tables and chairs. The food, just like the decor, does not disappoint.
The menu is short and simple at Wayfare Tavern, which is a relief in this age of Cheesecake Factory menus that resemble phone books. I ordered the Wild Sea Bass, which was served on a bed of potatoes with capers and caviar. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the capers and caviar added a nice tart flavor. My companion had the Lobster Cobb Salad, which she raved about. Our meals were preceded by warm, doughy popovers, and though we could have finished our meal with a dessert such as a Caramel Pear Tart and Pumpkin Pudding, we were too full and content from dinner to eat one more bite. All in all, it was a lovely meal.
