Walzwerk Restaurant
Walzwerk is located in one of the less glamorous parts of the Mission, but is worth visiting for the authentic German food. The food leaves you satisfied, and the decor brings you back to East Berlin before the wall came down. When you enter the restaurant, you're greeted by a sign that indicates that you are leaving the American sector; the first framed pictures you see on the wall are of Marx and Lenin, but rest assured, payment is accepted in cash and credit, in U.S. dollars.
The Walzwerk menu is typically German in its offerings: sauerbraten, Bratwurst or cheese spätzle, plus other traditional dishes. I always order a schnitzel at German restaurants, and the one at Walzwerk is great (they serve it with mashed potatoes and cabbage). For dessert? A typical apple strudel. If we're talking German food, we have to mention beer. It seems that most of the beer on the menu at Walzwerk is from East Germany, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding your favorite beer on the menu. For those who like experimenting with their drinks, try a diesel (beer with Coca-Cola).
