Aziza´s beautiful interiors.

Aziza´s beautiful interiors.

Lovers of light, Mediterranean flavors, exotic cocktails, and chocolatey desserts should visit Aziza. This well-reviewed restaurant has received a lot of buzz from local and national media, so it is hard to believe that it is located on a nondescript street in the Richmond District, far from the lights of downtown. Make your way down Geary Boulevard and enjoy a meal at Aziza.

Aziza is run by founder and head chef Mourad Lahlou, a former contestant on Iron Chef America who is currently developing a series for PBS on Moroccan cuisine. Remarkably, he came to San Francisco from his native Morocco to study business at San Francisco State University, and began experimenting in the kitchen to recreate the flavors of his homeland. The result is the contemporary, unique food found on his menu.

Ordering takes some deciphering. The main ingredient of each appetizer and entree is listed, followed by several ingredients. So while you may simply see 'flatbreads', 'couscous', 'chicken', etc., each dish is far more flavorful than the menu suggests. My favorite appetizer is their meatballs. They are small, perfect circles on a skewer, served with roasted grapes and jicama in a  spicy harissa sauce. The entrees include vegetarian and meat offerings. The lamb literally falls off the bone, while the beef is cooked perfectly and seasoned well. To top off your meal, order a dessert from pastry chef Melissa Chou.

The beautiful interior of the restaurant also must be noted. The walls are painted blue, candles at each table create a soft-mood lighting, and intricate tile work can be found at the entrance. Service is very attentive, and the waiters are happy to explain the unique menu to you. Aziza is all in all a great place for a special occasion.
