Mexican Restaurant San Jalisco
Once upon a time, the Mission did not have specialty cupcake shops, or vegan Japanese food, or organic frozen yogurt. It was a neighborhood where the eating options were simple and delicious: home-style Mexican and Central American food at cheap prices. To get a taste of the old Mission- along with a great meal, visit San Jalisco on South Van Ness.
If you're familiar with the area but not the name of this restaurant, here's the story: the restaurant was named Los Jarritos, just like the Mexican soda. Unfortunately, the makers of that soda threatened legal action, so the same restaurant is now called San Jalisco, after the home state of the owners. The menu offers Mexican classics like chilaquiles for breakfast, tostadas for lunch and taco and enchilada combos for dinner. The prices are all affordable, and the ambience is like eating in the kitchen of a family friend; piñatas, papel picado and maracas line the walls.
