An important factor in which performances to see is always the venue in which it is located. With very few exceptions I have avoided the larger impersonal arena venues such as HP Pavilion or Oracle Arena, and opted for the more personal and historical venues of The Fillmore, The Great American Music Hall, and of course, The Warfield.
While it would be great to see your favorite band at a local club, it is not realistic due to the size. However, there is a chance that while on tour your band will arrange dates at one of San Francisco’s historical mid-size venues such as The Warfield. Though small compared to the behemoth multi-use facilities, The Warfield is a classic. Set in the “colorful” Market Street corridor and located across the street from the Market Street Theater (which specializes in adult films), the location is less than ideal; however, this may be a blessing, as the lack of interest from real estate investors has allowed this venue to stand the test of time and continue providing a unique setting for performances in San Francisco. Whether on the floor or in the balcony, The Warfield is about as cozy as it gets. Some past performers include bands such as The Clash, Grateful Dead and U2, as well as theatrical productions such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Cantonese Opera from China.
Upcoming events can be found by visiting The Warfield’s website. With only 2,250 seats, one of the biggest challenges is getting a ticket for your favorite show. One of the main options is Ticketmaster, although for those of you looking to avoid the fees associated with Ticketmaster and Live in San Francisco, the Box Office is located on site and is open on Sundays from 10am – 4 pm as well as on nights of the show 90 minutes before show time. Should you be unable to get a ticket through the direct route, Craigslist is an excellent option. For the very last minute, you can be assured that there will be some ticket scalpers near the venue to add an element of risk to your ticket purchase.
