DJ Guillermo

San Pancho is lucky to have Long Beach native DJ Guillermo (Jacob Pena) manning the turntables in our lovely city. Among the most creative DJs in the City, Guillermo is adept with Classic Latin, Hip Hop, Funk and Boogie Disco, often finding the improbable song no one plays on an old LP and making it move the crowd. The nights he DJs -Sweater Funkand Colombia! - are some of the hottest in the City.

As one writer has it about the now legendary Sweater Funk nights: “When the rest of the city goes to bed early for the big week ahead, DJs and dancers alike take it down to Chinadown to sweat out the best in boogie disco every Sunday.” As for Colombia! at Elbo Room and Coda (with DJs Vinnie Esparza and Beto), that night has never seen an empty dancefloor, not for one minute – except before the doors open!

To give you some insight into the artist’s mind, Guillermo cites some of his likes as: “Brazilian records, 70's salsa, BOOGIEDISCO with handclaps!!!, good food with good folks, pandulce and Phill's coffee…photographing the passed out drunks on my way home from a gig, salt mines, owls, BBQing, cheap beer and good whiskey, jazz records that rock (literally, some fuzzed out vibraphones… handclaps in latin tunes or disco cuts, Os Mutantes, Milton Nascimento, Bugz in the attic, Dilla,The Midnighters, Los Hermanos Latinos, Paul Simon, Magazine, Van Halen, Puerto Rican All Stars, Joe Bataan, Joe Jackson, Duran Duran, Gal Costa, Kako, Fruko, Fela, Exploding Hearts.”
