True Grit

True Grit

True Grit is a Western directed by the Coen Brothers and starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and Matt Damon. The script is not an original work by the Coen Brothers, since the movie is an adaptation of a novel of the same title by Charles Portis, which was made into a movie in 1969. Jeff Bridges plays Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn (played in the original film by an ancient John Wayne).

Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), is a 14 year old girl who decided to avenge the death of her father, killed by a vagabond named Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). Mattie convinces an alcoholic police official named Rooster Cogburn (played by the always sensational Jeff Bridges) to join her in the search for Chaney.

The western is one of those cinematic genres that has seen better days, like the boxing movie, that is occasionally revived thanks to efforts such as this one. It has already been several years since the fantastic Unforgiven by Clint Eastwood or Dances with Wolves by Kevin Costner. True Grit brings the genre to the present days, since the general public and Hollywood executives have other tastes nowadays. Nevertheless, it is refreshing to take a look at the past and leave the confines of the movie theater.
