Cezanne's
Until September 6th, the great masterpieces of French Impressionism are on display at the DeYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park. On loan from the Musee D'Orsay in Paris, the exhibit "Birth of Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Musee D'Orsay" is a collection of Impressionist masterworks that provides a wonderful glimpse of over 100 paintings from artists such as Degas, Manet, Cezanne, and many more.
Located below the lobby of the DeYoung, the exhibit is expertly curated and laid out. Upon entering the exhibit space, visitors pass through spacious hall after hall filled with paintings that are organized chronologically and then by artist. The first few rooms show the evolution of impressionist painting, first with realist figures and then on to more impressionistic, pointillist styles. Later rooms show work by artists like Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cezanne, providing the viewer with little knowledge of impressionist art a solid introduction to the style and period, while the art connoisseur can still appreciate seeing lesser-known works by well-known artists, and enjoy seeing so many classics in one small space. Highlights include Renoir's "A Dance in the Country", the famous "Whistler's Mother", and Renoir's "The Swing".
A word of warning to anyone planning on seeing the exhibit: reservations are recommended, and you should expect a wait, as crowd size in the exhibit space is heavily controlled. Nevertheless, your wait time shouldn't be too long, and the crowd control allows for a more leisurely (less zoo-like) museum experience.
Tickets for the Impressionism exhibit, along with further information, are available on the DeYoung Museum site.
