Balenciaga and Spain
From now until July 4th, the DeYoung is hosting another blockbuster fashion exhibit. "Balenciaga and Spain" shows some of the Spanish designer's representative creations—dresses, coats and hats—along with material supporting the central idea behind the exhibit: Spanish history and culture heavily influenced the designer's work. The six sections include: Spanish Art, Regional Dress, the Spanish Court, Religious Life and Ceremony, the Bullfight, and Dance.
The exhibit shows dresses that are highly structural, overflowing with ruffles, and others that don't exactly flatter the female form- like a large, formless sack. You can see the ornate beadwork on many items, and the influence of bullfighters and Goya, among others, in Cristobal Balenciaga's fashion.
