AT&T Park
Don’t look now, but after the hype of the World Cup died down, the San Francisco Giants are now in the hunt for the playoffs and are playing some very good baseball. What about those of you who aren’t baseball fans or just not Giants fans in particular? Here are just a few reasons that you should go see a game- but first a little history lesson.
AT&T Park was the first privately financed ballpark in Major League Baseball since Dodger Stadium (1962) and features a nine-foot statue of Willie Mays for baseball history buffs, Portuguese water dogs who fetch home runs that splash into McCovey Cove an 80-foot Coca-Cola bottle with playground slides and even a miniature AT&T Park behind left field for the kids. Add to this a public transit system that will get you easily from most parts of the bay to the waterfront stadium a trip to the park should be a part of any San Francisco visit.
Now for some reasons to go:
- Baseball, pure and simple: obviously this is a prime attraction and needs no explanation.
- Location & Architecture: sports facilities are an experiment in architectural design as well as utility. This park, located near downtown and right on the waterfront, is both easy to get to and offers great views both inside and outside (just see the image at left).
- Food & Beer: Yes, it is expensive, but a beer, some peanuts and garlic fries (unique to San Francisco) are part of an enjoyable experience at the ballpark.
- Inexpensive: While this is relative, going to a baseball game is one of the most affordable events to attend (after your son or daughter’s soccer game), and this park even offers the option to walk along the waterfront and get a free view from the outside.
Whether you're visiting from out of town, taking your kid to the ballgame for the first time, or on a date, a day or night at the ballpark is a must for everyone who lives in or visits San Francisco.
