Now that we are in the third week of September, it is time for Oktoberfest in San Francisco, as a large swath of the Embarcadero goes red, yellow and black for Oktoberfest festivities. The official Oktoberfest by the Bay is held on Pier 48 on the Embarcadero from Thursday, September 23 to Sunday, September 26. Prepare for traditional German culture: music, dancing, food, and lots and lots of beer.

The Barbary Coast Conservancy of the American Cocktail, or BCCAC, is a volunteer-led organization focused on preserving the cultural heritage of saloons and their cocktails in San Francisco. While the city’s board of supervisors tries to tax, limit and otherwise harrass the city’s entertainment providers, it is nice to see a group promoting the importance of San Francisco’s watering holes, with San Francisco Cocktail Week, running from Tuesday September 21st-Saturday September 26th.

In a city with an incredible amount of entertainment options, it can often be difficult to choose. For residents and visitors alike, just one of the many options is the numerous, high-quality museums that offer ongoing as well as special exhibits. One of my favorites is the California Academy of Sciences, founded in 1853. The Academy of Sciences houses a natural history museum, planetarium, aquarium and even a rainforest dome, home to more than 40,000 live animals. The Academy also recently opened the doors to “The World’s Greenest Museum.” Whether counting the number of teeth on the albino alligator or exploring the Living Roof, this museum located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park is a must see.
